Jonas Carlsen

Bio

Jonas Carlsen (1992) lives and works in Oslo, Norway. He studied photography at the Nordic School of Photography & has a Master in Design from The Oslo School of Architecture & Design.

Carlsen's work interrogates the evolving relationship between humanity and technology, posing the question; "Where do we go from here?". Trough access to artificial environments - including research laboratories, hydroelectric dams, hospitals, anechoic chambers, and sewage treatment facilities, his photographs reveal the infrastructure that shape contemporary existence. Influenced by Taryn Simon and Henrik Spohler, Carlsen visualizes the hidden systems and apparatuses on which modern society depends, examining how these space mediate our understanding of reality.

By documenting sites at the intersection of science, medicine, industry and nature, Carlsen explores the cultural and technological forces that define our society. His images render the unfamiliar both seductive and legible, highlighting the contradictions embedded in the built environment. Moving between rural and urban contexts, he confronts the disparities in access to knowledge and power, tracing the evidence of human intentions in the structures we create. His works ultimately challenges the distinction between the natural and the constructed, questioning the frameworks through which we perceive and engage with the world.
